War, Rape, and Escape: The Human Flesh Market in the DR Congo

The humanitarian response in Burundi to the crisis in neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) "is literally buckling," the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) warned on Friday, as desperate reports emerge from thousands forced to flee the wrath of the M23, a Rwanda-backed rebel group.

More than 63,000 refugees have already crossed into Burundi, escaping the horrors ravaging eastern DRC. "This country, despite its best efforts, was not prepared for this emergency," said Faith Kasina, UNHCR's regional spokesperson for East Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes. The skyrocketing influx of displaced people is the largest Burundi has witnessed in decades, a consequence of the chaos reigning over the DRC’s mineral-rich region.

As the international community hesitates to act, the humanitarian response is on the verge of collapse. In Rugombo, the epicenter of refugee reception, 45,000 people are crammed into a stadium. "Conditions are extremely harsh... The stadium is literally bursting at the seams," Kasina described.

Sexual violence and human rights abuses continue to devastate entire populations in the DRC. In just two weeks of February, 895 cases of rape were reported—an average of more than 60 per day.

Among the victims, one mother recounted giving birth just three days before being forced to cross the Rusizi River with her newborn in her arms and four other children by her side. "She saw belongings floating down the river and feared her fate would be the same," Kasina revealed. Another refugee described the bitterness of reliving tragedy: as a teenager, she fled to Rugombo. Now, as an adult with six children, she finds herself forced to start over in the same place of misery and despair. "It’s an endless cycle of displacement," she lamented.

Meanwhile, the global silence is deafening. There are currently over one million Congolese refugees scattered across the African continent. Uganda has absorbed more than half of this population, while Burundi has become the primary refuge for those escaping the latest M23 offensive, which began in January.

Even before the current crisis, 6.7 million people were already displaced.
